How to read the scores
The Flesch Reading Ease score runs from 0 to 100 — the higher the number, the easier the text is to read. Scores of 60–70 read as plain English; above 70 is easy and conversational; below 30 is difficult, typically academic or technical. The Flesch-Kincaid grade level translates the same math into a U.S. school grade, so a score of 8 means a typical eighth-grader could follow it. Most web writing aims for grades 6–9.
Both scores are driven by two things: how long your sentences are, and how many syllables your words have. To make writing easier to read, shorten sentences and prefer shorter words.
Frequently asked questions
What's a good score for web content?
Aim for a Flesch Reading Ease of 60 or higher and a grade level around 6–9. That's comfortable for a general audience reading on a phone.
Why is the grade level so high?
Usually long sentences. Try breaking compound sentences into two, and replacing long words with shorter synonyms — the grade level drops quickly.
