How overtime pay works
Under the U.S. Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA), most hourly (non-exempt) employees must be paid at least 1.5× their regular rate for hours worked beyond 40 in a workweek. So if you earn $20/hour and work 46 hours, the first 40 hours pay $800 and the 6 overtime hours pay $30/hour for $180 — a $980 total.
Some states and contracts go further. California, for example, requires daily overtime after 8 hours and double-time (2×) after 12 hours in a day. Adjust the thresholds above to match your situation. This tool estimates gross pay before taxes and deductions.
Frequently asked questions
Is overtime calculated daily or weekly?
Federally, it's weekly — over 40 hours in a workweek. Some states add daily rules. Set the "overtime after" hours to whichever applies to you.
Is this my take-home pay?
No — this is gross pay before taxes, insurance, and other deductions. Your actual paycheck will be lower.
